Montane vegetation

Altitudinal zonation of montane vegetation in Malaysia

The forests on mountains in Malaysia differ, according to altitude, in their appearance, structure and floristic composition. At about 1200-1500 metres, hill dipterocarp forest merges into lower montane forest, which in turn becomes upper montane, and on Mount Kinabalu, subalpine and alpine vegetation. However, on isolated mountains, such as Gunung Jerai in Peninsular Malaysia, the vegetation zones are telescoped, and the transition from hill dipterocarp forest directly into upper montane is abrupt, occurring at an altitude of about 800 metres.
