INTRODUCTION

E. Soepadmo

The 'Plants volume' focuses mainly on the wealth of plant life forms found in Malaysia, from unicellular algae to 81-metre-tall Koompassia excelsa trees, and the socioeconomic impact of these plant resources. Underlying the discussion of man's exploitation of plant resources is the driving theme of conservation and sustainable forest management. Also highlighted in this volume are the relationships between plants and the physical environment. In the physical environment, plants are primary producers, forming vital and complex relationships with animals, the elements and other plants, whilst in the human world they fulfil both ecological and economic functions.
