Ferns and fern allies
Malaysia is home to more than 650 species of ferns and fern allies, about 5.4 per cent of the world's population. Of these, just over 500 are found in Peninsular Malaysia alone. This richness in species can be attributed to an abundance of rainfall and sunshine, the presence of large areas of pristine forest, and the existence of varying vegetation zones. Ferns grow in a wide range of habitats, but are found in greatest diversity in Malaysia's lowland and montane forests.
