Malaysia is one of the world's richest centres of plant diversity. Peninsular Malaysia is home to an estimated 12,500 species of flowering plants, while Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan) harbours between 10,000 and 12,000, including a huge number of endemics. To preserve this invaluable natural resource, Malaysia practises several forms of conservation. Sarawak has, in addition, drawn up stringent legislation. International conventions also play a major part. Despite these efforts, conservation remains an uphill task in the face of rapid development.
