Conifers
Conifers, or cone-bearing plants, are the dominant group among gymnosperms, or plants with naked seeds. Worldwide, they comprise 60 genera and 600 species of trees and shrubs, distributed mainly in the mountains and flat plains of cold, temperate regions. In the tropics, they are confined to forests of high altitude. In Malaysia, conifers are represented by species of three native and four introduced families. A few species are an important source of timber for the country, while introduced species are used mainly as ornamentals.
