Algae

Aishah Salleh

Malaysia's rivers, ponds, lakes, mangroves and seas harbour a very rich and fascinating group of plants called algae. These are photosynthetic, non-vascular plants that contain chlorophyll and have simple reproductive structures. This vast array of organisms is diverse in its range of habitat, size, organization, physiology, biochemistry and reproduction. In Malaysia, about 600 genera with 2,000 species of algae have been recorded. Laymen refer to algae by various names, such as 'pond scum', 'frog spittle', 'water moss' and 'seaweed'.
