Introduced to Malaya in the 1920s, weightlifting’s popularity increased after World War II when local exponents brought home four medals from the 1950 British Empire Games. The country’s weightlifters have carried on this tradition of success: at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, local lifters captured five medals.
