In 1997, M. Magendran (right) and N. Mohandas became the first two Malaysians to reach Everest's peak.

Many of Malaysia’s highlands were mapped by British explorers in the 19th century. Malaysians today continue the tradition of discovery and adventure over rough and challenging terrain in the country and beyond. In 1997, the nation reached the pinnacle of mountaineering when two Malaysians reached the peak of Mount Everest.
