Formula One and motor racing The history of organized car racing in Malaysia stretches back to the 1940s, and the Malaysia Grand Prix has been held since 1962. The opening of the state-of-the-art Sepang International Circuit in 1999 ushered in a new era for car racing in the country; Malaysia earned the right to host Formula One (F1), the most prestigious event on the international racing circuit. The country has staged the F1 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix nine times, and has signed a contract to extend its hosting of the race until 2015.
