Introduced to Malaya by the British in the early 1900s, athletics has maintained a prominent place in local sports culture. The Malaysian Amateur Althletics Union (MAAU), initially formed in 1920, has spearheaded the growth of the sport locally. The 1960s marked the highpoint of Malaysian athletics when athletes were conspicuous in their presence in society and distinguished in their performances on the track and field. Subsequent generations have carried on this tradition of athletic excellence, capturing medals in numerous international competitions.
