Hockey: Origins and the domestic game

The sport of hockey—also called ‘field hockey’ to distinguish it from a similar but faster variation played on ice (see ‘Ice sports’)—has been played in Malaysia since the late 19th century. Numerous domestic and international tournaments have been held locally, and have been well attended by the public, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s.
