In terms of performance in international competitions, Malaysian football peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. The national team qualified twice for the Olympic Games during that period, and made their mark in various regional tournaments. The following decades witnessed a decline in the overall competitiveness of the Malaysian team. The national side, however, has experienced a resurgence of late. In 2007, Malaysia emerged victorious from the Merdeka Tournament held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the country’s Independence.
