Football: Origins and the domestic game

From its earliest recorded appearance in the Malay Peninsula in the late 19th century, football rapidly became popular among the local population, as well as the British. It did not take long for the sport to become formally organized. Expanding from its original administrative base in Selangor, and boosted by the close involvement of both the nation’s first prime minister and the fifth Sultan of Pahang, the sport continues to be one of the most popular and widely played in the country.
