For centuries, the zebra dove, better known in Malaysia as the merbok, has been prized for its voice. These birds are bred and trained to sing complex melodies in order to participate in contests. Merbok-singing competitions have been a fixture on the local and regional festive calendars since the 1960s, and champion-calibre birds can earn trophies and other prizes.
