Patronage and art
The art market flourished after the setting up of the National Art Gallery, the establishment of private galleries following suit. Although earlier watercolour artworks were bought by foreigners, many locals became collectors as well. Later, during the 1990s, more corporations and private collectors from the middle class began to invest in the local art market. While the art market was depressed during the economic crisis of 1997, a demand for early local works continued. The art market has become lively again in recent years.
