Art education

Historical and political factors influenced the development of art education in Malaysia. Initially treated as unimportant by the British colonialists, it was not systematically promoted. This changed during the 1950s when the seeds of modern art education were planted. During the 1960s, the establishment of local art colleges began to take place. An increased demand for skilled artists and designers occurred with the advent of industrialization processes. The new respectability commanded by visual artists has seen a demand for tertiary level art education.
