Contemporary Islamic art

Zakaria Ali

Islam arrived in the Malay Peninsula in the 14th century. Malay-Islamic revivalist tendencies developed within the contemporary art scene from the late 1970s, inspired by local socio-political influences and global Islamist developments. They were also prompted by the search for non-secular values and the need to define nationalistic identity within the visual arts context. These factors contributed to recent attempts by some contemporary Malay artists to draw from their Islamic heritage and produce art works that consciously mirror Islamic influences.
