Installation art
Installation art in Malaysia emerged in the 1970s and has subsequently played a major role in the nation’s art history. The origins of this form of art-making can be traced to European avant-garde movements of the early 20th century and to American art movements of the 1960s. Fundamentally, installation art is shaped by ideas and expressed through objects in space. Distinct from sculpture, installations seek to bridge the gap between art and the viewer through the use of unconventional materials, scale and space, thus bringing viewers closer to the work.
