The growth of a modern art tradition in this country, during the pre-Independence era, is marked by the emergence of local art groups which provided the impetus for artists to work and exhibit together. Influenced by the multi-racial social contexts, this development was initially determined by particularized ethnic groupings, influenced by linguistic orientations. In recent years, such formally structured groupings have decreased, but artists have continued to come together in important group exhibitions to project commonly shared ideatic preferences and artistic approaches.
