While Malaysian traditional music is more frequently heard in rural areas throughout the country, when performed in urban cultural centres, it draws large and enthusiastic crowds—a testament to its continuing vitality. Played for leisure and entertainment, special occasions and ceremonies, a plethora of musical instruments are used in virtually every ethnic group in every state in the country. Often made from readily available local materials, many traditional instruments share common ancestries.
