Beaded wedding belts, this one with a silver buckle, were worn by both brides and grooms.

The Straits Chinese or Peranakan, the descendants of intermarriages between immigrant Chinese males and local females from the 1400s, resided mainly in Melaka, Penang and Singapore. Over the centuries, a unique blend of the two cultures emerged which was reflected in their dress, language, customs and traditions. Elaborate jewellery and metalware items commonly worn and used by the Straits Chinese were best seen during a wedding when these were traditionally displayed on large trays for all to see. Many of the metals, however, were plated. Besides jewellery, the most important characteristic item was the betel leaf or sirih set.
