Brassware
Malays have long used fine brassware in daily life, this custom evolving due to a need for an alternative to silver and gold, usually reserved for royalty and the aristocracy, for use by ordinary villagers. Items such as dulang (large trays), sirih (betel) sets, kettles, pots, spittoons, oil lamps and incense burners are now entrenched in traditional Malay culture. The brassware of Terengganu artisans, particularly white brass, is renowned. Brass cannons, gongs, kettles and adornments are also highly prized by many of the indigenous peoples of Sarawak and Sabah.
