Weapons in Malaysia were traditionally crafted from iron. Production techniques have largely remained the same, although modern bellows and more sophisticated tools were introduced in the 20th century. Of the variety of traditional Malaysian weaponry, the most unique, mysterious and legendary is the Malay kris, a dagger initially used as a thrusting weapon for fighting at close quarters. The kris later became a symbol of status, a ceremonial icon and a prized work of art.
