Variety in form and function

Heidi Munan

At one time, the typical Malaysian home was furnished with mats to sit and sleep on, and baskets for everything else. They continue to be made for new uses and markets. Although not durable, a well-made item is treasured and is sometimes made for special occasions. Baskets are used in all aspects of life, from carrying babies and produce to storing valuable belongings, while the use of mats ranges from being used in harvesting to wrapping corpses. Conical covers do double duty—as hats to protect against the elements and to keep flying insects away from food.
