Wood and other carvings

Henry Bong

There is a long and proud local tradition of working with wood and other natural raw materials such as bamboo, coconut shell, bone, horn, deer antler, boar tusk, hornbill ivory and occasionally stone. In the past, most of such works were either made by craftsmen for their own use or were commissioned by wealthy patrons. Then, as now, a high level of skill coupled with patience and sophistication was needed to generate objects of great artistry and beauty—be they humble domestic utensils or rare majestic structures of monumental proportions.
