Silver betelnut sirih set dating from the late 19th to early 20th century CE. The set would have been commissioned by a Malay patron of distinction. Its repoussé decoration with floral and foliate motifs is in accordance with Islamic design requirements (Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia Collection).

Islamic design principles and motifs Islamic art forms were traditionally used on a wide variety of items both functional and decorative, and the range of their application has increased over the years. Early local examples of Islamic art were heavily influenced by that of the Middle East as a result of Arab trade with the Malay Peninsula. However, local artisans soon began to draw inspiration from the local environment and culture, creating a distinct Malay style of Islamic art.
