Influences on arts and crafts: A historical perspective
Malaysia’s artistic evolution has to a large extent been driven by influences from afar. From the 5th century CE, the Buddhist and Hindu religions prevailed, but to a large extent had been displaced by Islam by the 15th century CE. Settlers from Europe, China and India provided further inputs; each precipitated a change in art forms, many of which have survived—and are still being practised—to this day.
