Crafts and the visual arts/ Contents

Introduction

Syed Ahmad Jamal

This volume surveys the rich and varied craft traditions of Malaysia and the development of Malaysian modern art into a medium which expresses its own unique subject matter, viewpoints and realities. As a discussion of these subjects inevitably touches on the country’s history, culture and multi-ethnic population, other volumes in this series, such as Early History, Performing Arts and Peoples and Traditions, also have relevance. The extensive nature of the subject being dealt with in this volume means that not everything can be covered. However, readers of this book should gain a holistic understanding and appreciation of Malaysia’s crafts and visual arts and its vibrant cultural heritage.

Malay pottery

Malay pottery is not made using a potter’s wheel or spinner, nor are glazes used. Its colour results solely from the firing process and the properties of the clay used.
