Syed Ahmad Jamal

Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal is a renowned Malaysian artist whose varied career has spanned 50 years. Over the years he has played a significant and pioneering role in the development of modern art and art infrastructure in Malaysia as an artist, curator, art educator, and through holding various important administrative positions. He has lectured in Malaysia and overseas and was the Principal of the Specialist Teachers’ Training Institute from 1964–72. He served as Director of the National Art Gallery from 1983–91 and was Director of the Cultural Center at Universiti Malaya from 1975–79. The numerous prestigious awards he has received include Ahli Mangku Negara (1969), Kesatria Mangku Negara (1983), Australian Cultural Award – Visual Art (1984), Asean Cultural Award – Visual Art (1987), the National Artist Award (1995) and the Panglima Jasa Negara (1996). He has participated in a number of exhibitions, most recently at Galeri Petronas in 2006, has received many art prizes, and has published books on Malaysian modern art, crafts and culture.
