Malaysia’s mineral resources include copper, gold, magnesium, phosphate, wolfram, bauxite, iron ore and tin. The methods of extraction are varied, as are the uses of the minerals. Until the 1980s, however, it was tin which had the biggest impact on the nation. It significantly influenced patterns in demography, migration, and urban and infrastructure development. When the world tin market collapsed in 1985, causing the industry to decline sharply, Malaysia had already been the world’s largest tin producer for a remarkable 104 years.
