Population and income distribution

Malaysia had a population of 26.7 million in 2005, of which nearly 11 million made up the labour force. Economic disparities exist between ethnic groups and geographical regions. Poverty eradication initiatives in the 1970s and 1980s focused on rural poverty, while efforts under the National Development and National Vision Policies focused on hardcore and relative poverty. The goal of the government is to eradicate hardcore poverty by 2010.
