Since Independence, the labour market has experienced dramatic changes in both supply and demand. On the supply side, the quality of labour has risen and the participation of women in the labour force has grown significantly. On the demand side, there has been a clear shift of labour, beginning in the 1970s, from agriculture to manufacturing and services. Since the 1990s, there has been increasing demand for science and technology-based knowledge workers. Where demand has outstripped supply, the economy has had to rely on foreign labour.
