Shophouses in Kuala Lumpur. The Pre-Independence shophouse had space for retail activities on the ground floor, and living quarters for the shopkeeper and his family on the upper floors.
The formal retail sector, once consisting mainly of family-run stores serving local neighbourhoods, now includes such varied forms as the department store, the supermarket, the shopping complex, the franchise, and the direct-selling company. Establishments are run by both local and foreign retailers. The informal sector—including wet markets, farmers’ markets, night markets, stalls, provision shops and pavement shops—further expands the range of shopping opportunities.
