Professional services
The professional services sub-sector encompasses occupations which are characterized by technical expertise and specialized knowledge. In 1957, professionals were mainly teachers and nurses; by the 1970s, a far more diverse range of occupations was represented, and since then the number of professionals has increased dramatically. Some of the most highly paid individuals in the economy are professionals. Remuneration for some professions is markedly higher in the private sector than in the public sector.
