An efficient and competitive port and shipping sector is vital to Malaysia, almost 95 per cent of whose trade is seaborne. Starting with just two major ports and a limited number of minor ones in 1957, Malaysia currently has seven federal ports and numerous state and minor ports, the result of a supply-driven approach and the privatization policy. The nation’s shipping fleet size has also expanded markedly over the years.
