As Malaysia entered into a new phase of industrial development under the Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991–95), it began to emphasize the growth of export-oriented, high value-added, high-technology industries by utilizing domestic research and development. Several important programmes and policies have been implemented to propel Malaysia to the forefront of modern growth, industrialization, information and communication technology (ICT) and biotechnology.
