Sarawak pepper

A pepper farm in Sarawak. Once the world’s largest producer of pepper, in 2005, Malaysia was the world’s fifth largest producer. Sarawak accounts for 95 per cent of the pepper produced.

Apart from tropical fruits, pork, poultry and eggs, most of the country’s food is imported. Attaining acceptable levels of self-sufficiency is an ongoing concern, while long-term policies are geared towards the development of a dynamic food sector that can eventually cater to both domestic and foreign demand.
