Shamanism in Sarawak

Clifford Sather

Shamanism forms a major component of the religious life and belief systems of most indigenous ethnic groups in Sarawak, even among some of those who have embraced Islam or Christianity. Using a variety of sometimes dramatic techniques, shamans work alongside other ritual specialists to perform a number of useful functions in their community, the most common being healing. Changing religious and secular influences, however, are now altering the shaman’s traditional position.
