Non-indigenous peoples of Sarawak

Daniel Chew and James Ritchie

About 30 per cent of Sarawak’s estimated population of two million are non-indigenous peoples. The majority of them are Chinese with Indians, Indonesians, Eurasians, Europeans and other minorities comprising smaller numbers. They were originally migrant communities whose cultural identities and traditions can be traced to their countries of origin. Although there is a consciousness of ethnicity and cultural identity among the non-indigenous peoples, they identify themselves as part of Sarawak’s multicultural society and as citizens of Malaysia.
