The harvest festival in Sarawak
Among the rice-farming communities of Sarawak, the harvest is an important occasion as the economic and social life of these groups revolves around the cultivation of rice. It is marked by elaborate rituals to give thanks to the gods for a bountiful harvest, and to invoke their blessings for the next crop. Traditionally, the Dayak communities celebrated their respective harvests at various times of the year, depending on the rice growing cycle. However, since 1965, the official Gawai Dayak (harvest festival) has been held on 1 and 2 June, which are state holidays.
