Priestesses, shamans and ritual specialists of Sabah

Patricia Regis and Judeth John Baptist

Shamanism is an intrinsic part of the life of Sabah’s indigenous communities which practise rituals derived from traditional belief systems that subscribe to the existence of a spirit world. Shamans, priestesses and ritual specialists act as intermediaries between the human and the supernatural worlds, and perform ceremonies to maintain harmony between the two. These ritual and spiritual experts, who are also regarded as mystics, may perform other roles in their communities—as healers, herbalists, midwives and advisers on local customs and beliefs.
