Non-indigenous peoples of Sabah

Patricia Regis, Stella Moo-Tan and Danny Wong

Amongst the heterogeneous population of Sabah are non-indigenous peoples comprising Chinese, Indians and other settlers who arrived in the 19th and 20th centuries. The British North Borneo Company that governed Sabah from 1881–1942 brought in large numbers of Chinese as part of its economic policy to open up the land in Sabah. The Indians are a small minority and were initially brought in as sepoys for the North Borneo Company’s constabulary and clerical services. More recent migrants from neighbouring countries add to the state’s cultural diversity.
