Adding to the multiethnic collage of Sabah are the inhabitants of the interior river valleys, who speak a variety of languages and dialects. The rivers are pivotal in the lives of these people who are collectively known as Orang Sungai (river people). Despite the influence of the outside world, the Orang Sungai’s traditional world-view remains strong even as roads and modern communications media penetrate the isolated river valleys that have nurtured their culture for centuries.
