Penan community and traditions
Traditionally a nomadic people, the Penan live mainly in the most remote parts of northern interior Sarawak. Although the majority of Penan have now settled, with only a few hundred still nomadic, the forest remains an integral part of their lives, and is the source of food, building materials for houses and boats, as well as materials for their cultural expressions. They continue to practise resource tenure unique to their community, and are renowned for their exceptional rattan weaving and blowpipe making skills.
