Overview

Malaysia’s ethnic diversity is celebrated in this enthralling volume. The volume begins with an explanation of the processes that have formed and melded the cultural melting pot that is Malaysia. The major part of the volume then goes on to describe and analyse each of the scores of ethnic groups that make up Malaysia’s heterogenous population.

The volume’s main focus is on the key distinguishing features of each group. Their origins are traced and their beliefs, values systems and world-view summarized. The organization and leadership of each group, their economic activities and their family and kinship patterns are examined. To provide further insights, the festivals and celebrations of each group are explained, their traditional artistic expressions showcased and, in several cases, their cuisine too.

Particular emphasis is given in the volume to the ethnic and cultural diversity of Sabah and Sarawak. The volume concludes with a discussion of the cultural fusion that underscores the multiculturalism of Malaysia and how this has fostered a unique national heritage.
