Other ethnic communities

Kenneth McPherson and Sarjit S. Gill

Adding to the ethnic diversity of Peninsular Malaysia are minority groups that settled in the country at various times over the centuries. Among the longest established are the Chitties, who are descended from Indian merchants in the Melaka Sultanate. The Nepalese, some of whom were Gurkha soldiers brought in by the British during the Emergency (1948–60), also came to Malaya to work in the gold mines and plantations. More recent migrants from various parts of Asia have established small communities in the country.
