National unity

Malaysia has a distinct multi-ethnic composition with a variety of ethnic groups professing different religious and cultural beliefs. This poses a challenge to the Malaysian government to maintain the peace and stability necessary for prosperity. By way of testimony to the government’s success, for the greater part of the years since achieving Independence in 1957, Malaysians have been able to live together in harmony. This has been due largely to policies that foster unity whilst taking into account the historical, political, economic and social dimensions.

National Service was implemented in 2003, with thousands of youths conscripted each year. One of the major aims of the programme is to enhance unity among the country’s multi racial communities.
