A family gathers to celebrate Hari Raya. It is customary to ask for forgiveness from elders and other family memebrs with the salutation maaf zahir batin.
Islamic festivals predominate in the Malay calendar; the most important are Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji. Rites of passage that mark important stages in a person’s life are celebrated according to Islamic tradition and are often accompanied by elaborate ceremonies.
