An abundance of local ingredients gave rise to a distinctive traditional Malay cuisine, with rice as the staple food. These ingredients were subsequently augmented with the arrival of foreign influences, and a wide range of local variants developed. Although elements of Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Thai and Arab cuisine have been incorporated into Malay food, it still retains its distinct identity, and plays an important role in Malay culture.
