Kadazandusun beliefs and traditions

Patricia Regis, Rita Lasimbang and Judeth John Baptist

A definitive characteristic of the Kadazandusun groups is the creed shared by the various communities within the group. They subscribe to the existence of a supernatural world that is presided over by two supreme deities and inhabited by a multitude of good and evil spirits, as well as agricultural beliefs centred around the cultivation of rice. Following the conversion of many Kadazandusun to Christianity, Islam and other religions, ritual practices are maintained to display cultural heritage and ethnic identity rather than for religious purposes.
